Dr. Julien Shine

Services

Dr. Julien Shine is a Montreal plastic surgeon whose practice combines reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, with a particular focus on gender-affirming surgery, breast surgery and body contouring.
‍
His path to plastic surgery began in engineering. Dr. Shine earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, graduating with distinction, before completing his medical degree at the Université de Montréal and his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Calgary. Today, the main focus of his practice is comprehensive gender-affirming surgery at the Centre Métropolitain de Chirurgie (CMC/GrS Montréal), where he is part of a small group of surgeons in Canada performing a broad range of gender-affirming procedures. At Hôpital Notre-Dame, his practice focuses on breast surgery as well as body contouring. This broad reconstructive experience informs his approach to aesthetic surgery.

His background in engineering continues to influence the way he approaches surgery, with an emphasis on careful planning, precision and problem-solving. At the same time, he recognizes that aesthetic surgery is highly individual. His goal is not to create a particular “look,” but to understand what each patient hopes to achieve and develop a surgical plan that respects their anatomy, proportions and meets their expectations.

Dr. Shine favours natural, balanced results and a straightforward, collaborative relationship with his patients. He believes patients should clearly understand their options, including the benefits, limitations and trade-offs of surgery. His approach is grounded in respect for each patient’s individual goals and in making surgical decisions together.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Shine has always been very active. His interests include hockey, cycling, water skiing, alpine skiing, running and hiking. He has competed in hockey, cycling and water skiing and completed several long-distance running and triathlon events. Away from work, he enjoys spending time outdoors and with his dog and family.

What I value most about plastic surgery is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Every patient has a unique story, and I am privileged to be part of that journey—whether the goal is restoring function, enhancing confidence, or simply helping someone feel more comfortable in their own skin. For me, plastic surgery is where artistry, precision, and human connection come together.

My relationship with my patients is at the heart of my practice. I believe exceptional care begins with listening. Understanding a patient’s goals, concerns, and expectations allows me to provide thoughtful, honest guidance and develop a treatment plan that is truly individualized. I want my patients to feel comfortable asking questions, confident in the decisions they make, and supported throughout every stage of their experience.

My surgical training and academic career have given me extensive experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. I completed my undergraduate studies and medical degree at the University of Toronto before undertaking surgical training at McGill University, where I also earned a Master of Science in Experimental Surgery. Following my plastic surgery residency, I pursued further fellowship training in Adult Craniofacial Trauma and Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery.

I subsequently joined the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specializing in complex cosmetic, reconstructive, and oncologic surgery of the face, head, and neck. During my time at UCSF, I was promoted to Associate Professor and developed particular expertise in the minimally invasive repair of complex facial injuries.

In 2002, I returned to Montreal as Chairman of Plastic Surgery and Associate Professor at McGill University, before transitioning to private practice in 2005. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to education, research, and the advancement of plastic surgery. I have trained more than 50 plastic surgeons, published more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles, contributed to major plastic surgery textbooks, and lectured internationally to physicians and surgical colleagues.

Today, my practice at Cosmetic Surgery Montreal reflects the experience I have gained throughout this career, together with a deep appreciation for aesthetics, balance, and proportion. I believe the most beautiful results are those that look natural, harmonious, and appropriate to the individual. My approach is never about creating a particular look, but about understanding each patient’s anatomy and aesthetic objectives and finding the right way to enhance what is uniquely theirs.

Outside of medicine, I value time with family and friends, staying active, travelling, discovering new places, and enjoying the simple pleasures of everyday life. I believe that maintaining curiosity, perspective, and balance outside the operating room makes me a better physician and a more well-rounded person.

Ultimately, my goal is to provide every patient with the combination of experience, honesty, technical precision, and personal attention that I would want for myself and my own family.
